A skilled workforce is critical to Zambia meeting the annual copper production of three million tonnes in the next 10 years. The country needs to have a workforce with the right skills so that productivity is enhanced.Training of mine operators is one way of growing the sector as it increases efficiency in the mine and minimise risks especially those that come about due inadequate skills to handle the equipment.
A combination of safety practices and skills are highly demanded for improved protection of mining infrastructure, equipment and workers.

Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Mutati has urged the Technical Education Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) to continously review curricula to deliver relevant and effective skills that will usher into industry-competent artisans as quality drives the economy.
Speaking when he addressed staff and management, at the tour of TEVETA and inspection of stalled construction works of an annex examinations and office block, Mr. Mutati observed that there was a need to bridge the gap by creating technological engagements with industry.

TEVETA has partnered with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation to create relevant platform for delivering digital skills for entrepreneurs, youths, women and career explorers in the country, particularly in the TEVET sector. TEVETA has prioritised enhancing the quality of skills in the 2021 - 2026 Strategic Plan in line with the job and wealth creation agenda of the Government. This is in order to augment the Authority's regulatory and coordination functions to impart quality skills for youth employment and actualisation of entrepreneurship. Capacity building is among the action plans to improve the quality of training in the TEVET sector. TEVETA, Kagem Mining Limited and Industrial Training Centre have signed a tripartite skills training contract for Earthmoving Equipment Operators that the mining company.
TEVETA Director General, Cleophas Takaiza said the K1.12 million training contract will benefit 300 employees at Kagem Mining Limited to increase production levels in the sector. Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati has appointed TEVETA Board with a five (5) pillar mandate aligned to relevance of skills, value addition, digital skills, quality and research development (R&D) in skills development. The Minister urged the Board to steer a leadership in the alignment of TEVET to the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP).

Huawei Zambia has launched an Innovation Fund to harness digital skills and groom digital talent among the young people in Zambia. The innovation strengthens digital transformation through skills training and innovation. The Fund will benefit TEVET and university students through scholarships and access to an innovation hub to be housed at Government Complex.
