The mining industry presents unique challenges to safety. Mine accidents have huge cost implications on the mine and lives of people. Minimising accidents in the mining sector is pivotal for sustained productivity of the sector. A combination of safety practices and skills are highly demanded for improved protection of mining infrastructure, equipment and human resources. The availability of mine rescue skilled persons enhances safety in the mines. However, training mine rescuers has been done outside the country. The cost of training mine rescuers abroad is costly and resulted into inadequate numbers of rescuers in the mining sector.

TEVETA has launched the 2021 to 2026 Strategic Plan. The Plan was launched by the Ministry of Higher Education Permanent Secretary (PS), Ms. Kayula Siame. The development of the Strategic Plan utilised several relevant national programmes and agendas to deduce a sense of direction towards the development of technical and vocational skills for Zambia. TEVETA has provided capacity building more than 130 examiners and assessors from different training institutions across the country. Officiating at the capacity building workshop, Director Assessment and Certification Ocean Matimba who represented the TEVETA Director General said “we value your support in the providing your services in preparing examinations and assessment papers. The Ministry of Higher Education has launched the revised national policy on technical education, vocational and entrepreneurship training (TEVET). The policy is the vehicle for improved productivity through industrialisation and value addition.
Minister of Higher Education Dr. Brian Mushimba who launched the policy said "through this newly launched policy the Government will provide guidance in the technical education vocational and entrepreneurship training for improved productivity through industrialization and value addition."

Government has embraced development of occupation standards in order to create quality skilled workforce in various economic sectors. Higher Education Permanent Secretary Kayula Siame disclosed.
