About K10m disbursed for SME/Out-of-school-youth skills training

news image The Ministry of Higher Education through the TEVETA has signed 178 contracts worth K9.9million for out of-school Youths and SME/Informal sector training in different skill areas. The contracts were signed with 47 training providers across the country. The training contracts will benefit 140, 140 unskilled out of school youth and SME/Informal sector players that need un-skilling to enhance their productivity, efficiency and material utilisation. A study shows that availability of teachers, workshops and cost were the key factors that influenced the selection of the vocational subjects (under two-tier system) offered at particular schools. Where demand is high, there is a likelihood of high fraudulence as well. The education sector is one of the sectors facing an increase in the number of individuals presenting different qualifications some of which do not meet the standards set under qualifications frameworks across the region. Minister of Finance Felix Mutati has announced the introduction of a Skills Development Fund in 2017 to address challenges of inadequate skills among craft individuals, artisans, technicians and technologists.
