The Assessment and examinations function is the most vital of the processes in Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training (TEVET) system as it determines not only the future of the graduates but also the employability of the graduates. A high-quality assessment system provides the right emphasis on the different aspects of the course, gives students appropriate feedback, ensures that the right students are deemed to have learnt sufficient, and results in a qualification that is well understood. With the right procedures and regulations in place, students, parents, training providers and the community at large can be confident in the quality of training and in return the employers can have confidence in the graduates.

The basis of assessment is the generation of evidence by candidates to show that they achieve the required standard. Assessment is therefore a structured system for gathering evidence of an individual’s ability to perform to identify standards. They confirm that performance has reached the level defined in the standard, provides direction and motivation, provides diagnostic feedback and assists in evaluating the effectiveness of training.
